Back to School

The start of August always sneaks up on me like a plot twist I should have seen coming but didn’t. Somehow, it’s already back-to-school season, and in our house, that means new backpacks, early mornings, and four very different kids getting ready to take on a brand-new year.

With a fifth grader, a sixth grader, an eighth grader, and a pre-schooler who thinks they run the place (and, let’s be honest, she might not be wrong), our house has been full of school supply lists, lunchbox debates, and last-minute Target runs. But as much as I’ll miss the slower mornings and spontaneous summer adventures, there’s something incredibly comforting about slipping back into a routine.

I thrive in structure. As a writer, editor, mom, and small business owner, having a rhythm to my days helps me stay grounded and creative. When the kids are off learning and growing, I finally get a little time to dive deep into my stories again, to shape scenes, build worlds, and reconnect with my characters (some of whom have a lot to say after being quiet all summer).

There’s something magical about the quiet that settles over the house after the last backpack zips and the front door closes. It’s the kind of silence that invites inspiration in, that whispers, “Okay, now let’s get to work.”

So here’s to fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and a return to the routines that keep us balanced. Whether you’re a parent, a student, or just someone who loves the cozy energy of back-to-school season, I hope this month brings you focus, clarity, and maybe even a little extra time to do what you love.

Now, coffee in hand, I’m off to write.
